Musings

A collection of rugs designed for the Mint Sydney.

When I first walked into the Mint on Macquarie Street I was struck by the craftsmanship of the building. The intricate details on every surface. The stain glass on the doors, and windows glistening as the sun dripped through. The blues of the stain glass fell onto the tiled floor. The deep tones of the wooden banister which rose to the second floor. One of Sydney’s oldest public buildings, it has a history of resilience and transformation. Though the purpose of the building has changed time and time again the building has preserved its historic details.

I drew on inspiration from William Morris for these designs. He had a strong ability to capture the landscapes of the England and his practice had a deep reverence for craftsmanship. It is not lost on me that as I created this collection the winter quickly waned to spring. My appreciation for the native ecosystems of Sydney and the Durramuragal Land which I inhabit is reflected within this collection. This collection marries the inspiration I found in the Mint and the changing of seasons to spring which I am grateful to experience.
