Voice Volume Protest

A textiles collection

The sound waves which emanate from a single voice cause thousands of particles to collide, crash and disrupt. When voices intersect thousands of particles of air collide, evoking the way fabrics are woven and knitted, each row of thread interlocking like waves of sound joining each other.

In this line of textiles, I want to capture the voice of these protestors. To represent the volume that can only be created through large gatherings of passionate people. Textiles is intrinsically linked to the story of protest. Fabric banners and flags are crafted from calico and spare cheap textiles.
The clothing the protester wear is imbued with a sense of protection. In Hong Kong the symbol of an umbrella rose to mean endurance and support as the protesters raised their umbrellas to protect themselves from tear gas. Denim was a staple of protest wear for its durability and its association with the working class. Because individuals who protest do not have power and many unite to have their voices heard. Protest creates volume for the marginalised and allows them to disrupt the societal norms. To be heard and understood is powerful.
